“I had studied this building in the Middle Temple for some time, but it never quite had the right atmosphere. Until that is, one Saturday morning when I went to paint a picture of the nearby fountain and noticed this amazing light and sky colour. Luckily I had a spare canvas with me so painted Devereux Chambers instead. I’ve been looking for the unique ‘mauve-blue-purpley’ sky ever since, but have never seen it again. I wonder if it’s something to do with the reflected light from the building? The colours in the shadows were interesting too!” Jack Russell MBE
