“One of the great “old fashioned” football grounds in the country. I was allowed to sit in one of the player’s boxes, low down close to the half way line, with my paint box on my lap, to make a colour note. The atmosphere was electric, and the colour of the ‘blue’ on show was very vibrant. I don’t think I’ve ever painted a ‘blue’ quite like it? Just before kick off officials walk around the ground throwing toffee sweets into the crowd. Some of the Everton player’s children in our box had a lot of fun trying to catch them. Unfortunately, not all were caught, and one or two fell into my paint box and into the wet paint! Oblivious to the wet paint the youngsters grabbed every sweet they could lay their hands on. Before long it looked as though they had all been face painting! I was pleased with the resulting colour note, and so were the Everton supporters, as they won four nil.” Jack Russell MBE
