He was with the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers (REME) Regiment who were supplying the Gloucestershire Regiment at the battle.  He managed to escape after the Gloucestershire Regiment were over run by the Communist Chinese Army.  To forget the horror of his experience he went to live in the United States straight after the war.  Ted travelled all the way back to England in 2023 to have his portrait painted and also be present at the Final Roll Call reunion in Gloucester in October, 2023.  His story, along with 9 other veterans who fought at the battle, have been published in the book “Final Roll Call”
The original portrait was exhibited at the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum and is now in the artist’s private collection.
